History

The elementary school El Colibrí Azul was born in 2016, driven by the need of three families to find a different space for their children's education.

We can describe the photo that marked our unusual beginning and is, in turn, the essence of the project: three children in a second grade classroom, with no blackboard.

This photo is a symbol of our project, since it speaks of the feasibility of carrying out our dream: to educate by establishing bonds. With scarce material resources (a blackboard) the educational experience was possible. There was teaching, there was learning. But first, there was a bond. We were not so wrong: our dream slowly became a reality and, that same year, six more families joined the initiative, driven by the same concern. The growth of the initial group resulted in a multi-grade, integrated 1st and 2nd grades of the first cycle of elementary school.

In 2017, due to the demand for vacancies, we opened a first grade. The teachers were responding to this need and we had over 20 students by the end of the year.

In 2018, we added a 5th grade and continued to grow and incorporate professionals to the staff, in order to meet the requirements of the groups. The workshops were therefore expanded and we added: needlework, ceramics, music, plastic arts, English, martial arts, tai chi and archery.

We currently have 97 students, from first to seventh grade. Our staff continues to grow by incorporating new energies and experiences  to provide all children with different stimuli. We open our doors to other institutions, since we understand that it is in community with other professionals where there is a real exchange and learning among peers and with children.

During these eight years we have asserted the idea of keeping a genuine and attentive look towards children. For this reason, we believe it is essential to work in classrooms with small groups and, at the same time, generate work spaces that allow us to contemplate and actively attend to the inequalities of many children. To this end, our projection tries to provide help to all social sectors. We are currently working with different diners in the city, which we visit with food and donations of different kinds.

We consider social reality inseparable from the school: we are not "what we have to eat" or "those who do not have to eat", "what we have for warmth" and "those who do not have for warmth". Our vision and understanding of the world cannot be reduced to "we have".

We believe that we are simply part of a society with inequalities and differences, which are recognized and addressed by the school staff as well as by the students and their families.

Our role is to provide our students with as many opportunities as possible for their mental and intellectual development both in and out of school.
